Mammoth basil is a lettuce leaf basil variety, originating from Italy. Like many culinary basils, it is a cultivar of Ocimum basilicum. The plant grows to about 46-61 cm in height high with a spread of about 40-45 cm and produces large ruffled leaves with a jagged edge. The leaves are twice as large as other Italian basils. The flavor is similar to, but stronger than the flavor of Genovese basil.
Growing Mammoth Basil
Indoor Sowing: Late Winter and Early Spring.
Direct Sowing: Spring and Summer.
- Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost in spring
- Sow Basil Seeds evenly by covering them with 0.5 cm of soil.
- Keep the soil moist.
- The basil seeds should germinate within a week.
