Purple African lily is a flowering plant from the genus Agapanthus and it is endemic to South Africa. It is also known as the Lily of the Nile in spite of only occurring in South Africa.
The leaves are basal, curved, and linear, growing up to 60 cm long. They are leathery and arranged in two opposite rows. The plant has a mostly underground stem called a rhizome that is used as a storage organ. The roots, which grow out of the rhizome, are white, thick and fleshy. It grows to a height of approximately 130cm and produces large funnel-shaped or tubular purple-blue flowers.
