Charleston Grey Watermelon is an heirloom that originated in Charleston, South Carolina. This popular variety dates to 1954.The classic oblong watermelon has red, fiber-less flesh and a tough, medium-thick gray-green rind often used for making watermelon rind pickles.
Growing Charleston Grey Watermelon from Seed
Indoor Sowing: Late Winter / Early Spring.
Direct Sowing: Spring and Early Summer.
- You can sow the seeds from the beginning of Spring to the beginning of Summer.
- Watermelons grow best on sandy loam soils, with good drainage and a soil pH of between 6.0 and 6.8.
- Soil temperature should be at least 18°C for germination to take place.
- Seeds should be sown in an area that gets full sun.
- Direct sow the seeds 2.5cm deep and 50 – 75cm apart, in soil mounds or ridges.
