All Sweet Watermelon is a high quality heirloom watermelon, descended from Crimson Sweet. Because of its many excellent qualities, this variety has been used in the breeding of many other hybrid types of watermelon.
A real winner in the garden, Watermelon All Sweet producing lovely long fruits that can weigh up to 15kg if you really push the plant. However expect multiple fruits of 6-8kg with a deep red flesh and a sweet flavor. All Sweet has a yellow-green rind, with dark-green broken stripes. It’s flesh is reddish in color with few, small seeds.
As soon as the vines begin to develop, apply a thick layer of mulch to control weeds and protect the melons from soil contact. Keep the soil moist until the fruit begins to grow, then water only if the soil dries out completely. Watch out for insect pests, which can be a problem. All Sweet melons are resistant to fusarium wilt and anthracnose.
Growing All Sweet Watermelon from Seed
Indoor Sowing: Not Recommended
Direct Sowing: Spring and Early Summer.
- You can direct sow the seeds from the beginning of Spring to the beginning of Summer.
- Watermelons grow best on sandy loam soils, with good drainage and a soil pH of between 6.0 and 6.8.
- Soil temperature should be at least 18°C for germination to take place.
- Seeds should be sown in an area that gets full sun.
- Direct sow the seeds 2.5cm deep and 50 – 75cm apart, in soil mounds or ridges.
- You need at least three months of reliably hot, sunny weather to grow and ripen a watermelon. During that time your average daily maximum temperature should be at least about 20-25°C
