Zwolsche Krul Celeriac Seeds. Zwolsche Krul Celeriac (Apium graveolens var. rapaceum), is a heirloom leaf celery from Holland that is grown as a culinary and ornamental herb. This Dutch heirloom variety can be difficult to find in most grocers. The plants look like parsley, with curly, finely cut leaves, but have a nice strong celery flavor to use in soup, stew, or salads. It is easier to grow in warm climates than regular celery. 80-100 days from transplant.
Zwolsche Krul Celeriac Culinary Uses
- The leaves are best eaten while tender it can be used like an herb or in cooked dishes as you would stalk celery.
- Great in dressings or for use in soups, stews and salads, pies and stuffings or any recipe where either celery or parsley is called for.
Growing Zwolsche Krul Celeriac
Indoor Sowing: Mid Winter.
Direct Sowing: Early Spring.
- Start the Celeriac seeds indoors in mid winter or direct sow in early spring.
- Use a good-quality seed starting mix.
- Moisten the soil, firm down gently and level it out.
- Surface sow the seeds and barely cover with soil, as the seeds need light to germinate.
- Water from below and ensure the soil stays moist but not soggy.
- Optimal germination temperature is about 15°C.
- Germination can be erratic and takes place 3 – 4 weeks after sowing.
- Transplant seedlings outdoors in spring, after the risk of frost has passed.
- Space the plants 37cm to 45cm from each other.
- Full sun or partial shade suit them equally well.
- Although fairly tolerant of drought, don’t plant them in very dry places and water when dry.
- Grows well in a containers and can be moved undercover in winter to extend the cropping season.
