Burdock medicinal uses are numerous and it has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. Burdock (Arctium lappa) is a plant native to Japan. It is a genus of biennial plants in the Asteraceae family, bearing globular flower heads with prickly bracts. The plants are cultivated for their edible root in Asia and is also used as a medicinal plant.

Burdock contains chemicals that might help fight bacteria and swelling. In traditional Chinese medicine, it’s used to get rid of toxins and as a blood purifier. It works primarily with the liver and kidneys. The root has an earthy taste but also has mild bitter properties.
Among its benefits, it may help in the treatment of:
- Blood purifier to clear the bloodstream of toxins.
- It is indicated for use in dry, scaly skin conditions.
- It is also useful for inflamed skin conditions such as acne and boils.
- Diuretic to help eliminate excess water by increasing urine output.
- May help with high blood pressure as it has a relaxing effect on blood vessels in addition to lowering blood cholesterol.
Caution: Not for use during pregnancy or lactation and people with blood disorders should also not use Burdock.

Burdock Tea
- Add 1 tablespoon of dried burdock root OR 2 tablespoons of coarsely cut fresh root in a pot.
- Add 3 cups of water to the pot.
- Bring to a boil, then lower heat to simmer for 30 minutes.
- Allow to steep for another 20 minutes. Serve hot.
