Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca oil, is an essential oil that comes from steaming the leaves of the Australian tea tree. When used topically, tea tree oil is believed to be antibacterial. Tea tree oil is available as an oil and in many over-the-counter skin products, including soaps and lotions. The safest way to use tea tree is in topical forms.

Among its benefits, it may help in the treatment of:

  • Stings, burns, wounds and skin infections of all kinds.
  • Dandruff and to promote hair growth.
  • Gingivitis and other oral health issues.
  • Congested sinuses and chest congestion.
  • Acute infections, notably cystitis, glandular fever and chronic fatigue syndrome.
  • Thrush, vaginal infections, acne, athlete’s foot, verrucae, warts, insect bites, cold sores and nits.

CAUTION: Tea tree oil should not be swallowed. Taking it orally can cause serious symptoms such as confusion, ataxia, breathing problems, and coma.

Tea Tree Herbal Recipes

Tea Tree Ointment.

Ingredients: 1 Tbsp Tea Tree Oil, 9g Beeswax, 1/3 cup Olive Oil.

  • Fill a medium-sized pan with 3 cups of water.
  • Place the pan on the stove over medium heat.
  • In mason jar, combine the Olive Oil and the beeswax.
  • Place the jar containing the blend into the pan of water to create a double boiler.
  • Heat the blend until the beeswax melts.
  • Stir the Olive Oil and beeswax mixture well.
  • Once the beeswax is completely melted, add the Tea Tree Oil.
  • Pour into metal tins or containers.
