Orange Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) is one the most popular horticultural perennials around the world. It flowers for long periods with its vivid orange and bright purple/blue inflorescence and is an ideal pot plant and cut flower subject. When potting, the Bird of Paradise is very adaptable and can be grown indoors as a perfect houseplant for home and commercial interiors.
Indigenous to the Eastern Cape, this tough evergreen perennial can withstand dry spells and can also tolerate mild frost, recovering quickly if affected. Common Names: bird of paradise, crane flower, (afrikaans: kraanvoëlblom)
Growing Orange Bird of Paradise
Indoor Sowing: Spring and Summer.
Direct Sowing: Spring and Summer.
- Remove the orange tufts from the seeds.
- Soak in lukewarm water for 24 hours.
- Scarify the seed lightly then sow in potting soil. Keep moist.
- Germination should occur in 2-3 months, but can also take as long as 6 months or more.
- Transplant to individual pots or ground when seedlings have 3-5 leaves.
- It takes 3-5 years for the plants to start producing flowers.
