Purple Balloon Flower Seeds. Platycodon grandiflorus is a species of herbaceous flowering perennial plant of the family Campanulaceae, and the only member of the genus Platycodon. It is native to East Asia (China, Korea, Japan, and the Russian Far East). It is commonly known as balloon flower (referring to the balloon-shaped flower buds),Chinese bellflower, or platycodon.
The balloon flower is a hardy plant that is able to grow in both dry climates as well as cold climates. Balloon Flowers are easy to grow, long-lived perennials. Long-lasting star-shaped flowers emerge from balloon-like buds in summer.
Growing Purple Balloon Flower
Indoor Sowing: Spring.
Direct Sowing: Spring.
- Plant the Purple balloon flower seeds in the spring when all chance of frost has passed.
- Choose a site that gets full sun to slight partial shade, and dig a 7.6 cm layer of compost into the soil.
- Seed needs light to germinate. Sprinkle the seeds on top of the soil and water them.
- Germination takes about 14 -30 days.
- Keep the ground moist around the new seedlings. In most cases, you’ll get flowers in the first year you plant them.
- Plants prefer part sun to light shade and regular water.
- Balloon flower plants do not like to be disturbed and rarely need to be divided.
