Hojem Onion is an Intermediate day onion. Round light brown onions with a creamy white interior that are excellent for storing.
This variety should be grown in areas south of Bloemfontein all the way down to the Western Cape and Eastern Cape.
Growing Hojem Onion
Indoor Sowing: Early Autumn.
Direct Sowing: Mid Autumn and Late Autumn.
- The best sowing time for Hojem is from April to the end of May.
- Onions like soil that drains well. Heavy or clay soils should be avoided or amended with lots of compost.
- Because onions are such a long crop, include an organic fertilizer in the soil preparation.
- For direct seeding, sow seeds 1.3cm deep, in rows 20cm apart.
- Thin out the seedlings first to 5cm apart, and later to 10cm. C
- Harden off indoor-sown plants in spring or early autumn, before planting into prepared ground.
- Space plants 5–10cm apart, in rows 25–30cm apart.
