Fordhook Giant (Beta vulgaris) has a dark glossy green leaves. It takes 58 days to mature after seedling transplant. Stems are broad and white in color. The leaves are deeply savoyed, and the leaf margins are rippled. This Swiss chard variety is the most commonly used variety in South Africa. In South Africa Swiss Chard is usually referred to simply as Spinach. Enjoy it like you would spinach or other greens, such as cut up in salads or sautéed. This variety is both cold- and heat-tolerant.
Growing Fordhook Giant Swiss Chard
Indoor Sowing: Late Winter and Late Summer.
Direct Sowing: Early Spring, Early Autumn and Mid Autumn.
- Direct sow seeds in average soil in full sun or partial shade or start the seeds indoors and transplant later.
- Sow the seeds individually about 15cm apart and cover with a layer of fine soil.
- Firm lightly and keep evenly moist.
- Germination in about 7-14 days.
