Purple Top White Globe Turnip is an old heirloom turnip dating back prior to 1880. The roots are smooth and nearly round. Bright purple on top and creamy white in the portion below the soil line. They are mild flavored and sweet, and can reach 13cm in diameter but are better for eating when picked at 5-8cm. The young leaves of this variety can be cooked. This variety of turnips is popular for both home and commercial growth.
Growing Purple Top White Globe Turnip
- A cool weather crop, turnips thrive when planted three weeks before the last frost in the spring, or after the hottest part of summer for an Autumn crop.
- Grow turnips in full sun or partial shade.
- Plant turnips in well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a soil pH of 5.5 to 6.8.
- Turnips grow best in temperatures from 7-24°C.
- Direct sow turnip seeds in rich, deeply worked soil and full sun, 1/2″ deep in rows 12-18″ apart and as the seedlings grow, thin them to 4-6″ apart.
- They are best harvested before temperatures exceed 24°C .
