Greenfeast pea, also known as Lincoln, is one of the sweetest heirloom peas available. It was originally bred in England and and first offered to growers in America in 1908. Greenfeast is a shelling variety that has best flavor if harvested as soon as pods are plump and well filled.
It grows to a height of 90cm, with the green pods growing to 6.5cm. A very productive, heavy bearing variety which produces rounded small, sweet, juicy pods. The leaves are small and dainty, in comparison to pea varieties with much bigger leaves, such as the Oregan Sugar Pod Pea.
Greenfeast pea is more tolerant to heat than most peas and keeps on producing even as the weather warms up.
Growing Greenfeast Peas
- Garden peas are climbing plants and for best productivity and ease of harvest they should be grown on a short trellis.
- Best grown in full sun but can also cope with very light shade.
- Sow pea seeds 2.5cm deep and space seeds 6cm apart to form a vigorous wall of pea plants.
- Plant directly where they are to grow as peas can suffer from transplant shock.
- Water once and don’t water again until the seedlings emerge to reduce the chance of the pea seeds rotting in the soil.
- Germination takes 9 – 14 days.
- Harvest 12 – 14 weeks after sowing.
