Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. It is also known as Chinese parsley, dhania or cilantro. All parts of the plant are edible, but the fresh leaves and the dried seeds are the parts most traditionally used in cooking.
Growing Coriander
Indoor Sowing: Spring to Autumn.
Direct Sowing: Spring to Autumn.
- Seeds can be started in well-prepared soil outdoors or sown in pots filled with multi-purpose compost..
- Coriander prefers well-drained soil, rich in compost.
- Soak seeds overnight in water and then sow seeds directly into the garden or containers.
- Choose a sunny, warm location.
- Sow the seeds thinly, about 10cm apart and cover lightly with soil.
- It is best to grow it in these crowded conditions, because the leaves will shade the roots and help to keep the plant from bolting in hot weather.
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy.
- Germination in about 10 days.
- Sow every three or four weeks for a constant supply of leaves.
- Keep soil and compost damp, but avoid over-watering. Dry soil or compost can cause plants to bolt or flower prematurely.
