Berry-like fruit with a unique tart-sweet taste. The black mulberry is generally considered the best tasting of the various mulberry species. Mulberry trees are large members of the Moraceae family that range in height from 30-50 feet. While some mulberries come in the form of small bushes, the fruit-bearing types are large trees. They are known to be hardy, self-pollinating, deciduous trees. The fruit from mulberry trees ripen in midsummer and have been known to produce delicious, mild, and sweet drupes that resemble blackberries.
Growing Black Mulberry Tree
Indoor Sowing: Cold Stratification and then transplant seedlings once big enough.
Direct Sowing: Late Autumn and Early Winter.
- Dampen a piece of filter paper or paper napkin with water.
- Put the Black Mulberry Tree seeds on the damp napkin or filter paper and place it in a sealed plastic bag.
- Place the sealed bag in the refrigerator.
- Leave the seeds in the refrigerator for 60 to 100 days for stratification, or cold treatment.
- Remove the seeds from the refrigerator at the end of the 60 to 100 days.
- Prepare a tray with a mixture of equal parts soil, peat and perlite.
- Place the seeds just under the soil surface.
- Water the seeds until the soil is moist.
- Place the tray in a warm, sunny area – light for a minimum of 8 hours a day is required.
- Check soil moisture each day and water as needed.
- Check seeds every 14 days for germination.
- Pick out the mulberry seedlings as soon as roots appear. The roots are fragile and longer roots are easier to damage.
- Transplant the seedlings into individual pots, a minimum of 4 inches, to give them space to grow.
- If there is no danger of freezing, the pots can be moved outdoors to a sunny location.
- Water weekly to keep the soil moist.
- In 12 to 24 months the seedlings will be big enough to move to their permanent location.
