Description

Bulls Blood Beetroot (Beta vulgaris ‘Bull’s Blood’) is a heirloom variety dating from 1840. It produces deep red-purple edible leaves and small, tasty beets which are best harvested when they’re 7cm in size.
This useful crop can be used at any stage of growth, harvest the leaves for baby leaf, in mixed salads or use steamed like spinach, or the roots can be left to grow like any other beetroot.
This variety is used by commercial growers for both baby leaf and mixed salad leaves. The leaves are broader than other beetroot varieties, more flavorful than other red accent crops and they can be harvested for baby leaf salads in as little as 35 days. The roots are tender and have a great flavor especially when young. Harvest in 60 days.

Growing Bulls Blood Beetroot

Indoor Sowing: Spring and Autumn.

Direct Sowing: Year Round.

The best planting times for beetroot are spring and autumn, but the vegetables also do well during summer on South Africa’s Highveld and winter in the Lowveld.
Make sure the soil in your bed or container is loose, fertile soil with plenty of well rotted organic matter added.
Form a groove (drill) in the prepared bed about 2 cm deep.
Sow the beetroot seeds 10 cm apart in the drill.
Space rows 30 cm apart.
Optimum germination temperatures of between 6°C and 24ºC.
Beetroot seeds are clusters of seeds which will produce 3 or 4 separate seedlings.
Thin the new seedlings to leave the strongest otherwise the beets will be crowded and remain small.
Keep the plants well watered in dry conditions.
