White African lily is a flowering plant from the genus Agapanthus and it is endemic to South Africa. It is also known as the Lily of the Nile in spite of only occurring in South Africa.
The leaves are basal, curved, and linear, growing up to 60 cm long. They are leathery and arranged in two opposite rows. The plant has a mostly underground stem called a rhizome that is used as a storage organ. The roots, which grow out of the rhizome, are white, thick and fleshy. This compact plant grows to a medium height and produces pure-white flower heads of starry, upturned florets with yellow stamens.
Growing White African Lily
Indoor Sowing: Spring and Summer.
Direct Sowing: Spring and Summer.
- Sow the seeds in shallow pots with drainage holes.
- Sow the seeds by placing them on the surface and pressing them in, then covering them over with a thin layer of soil.
- Place the pots in a warm spot out of direct sunlight.
- Keep the medium moist, but not overly wet.
- Optimum germination temperature is 20-30°C.
- Germination in about 1 month, but may take longer.
