Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) also called sleepy plant, action plant, touch-me-not, or shameplant, is a creeping annual or short-lived perennial flowering plant of the pea/legume family Fabaceae. The plant grows to a height of about 30 cm. It has compound leaves and small globular pink or mauve flower puffs. It is often grown for its curiosity value, but it actually has a lot of medicinal value. The sensitive compound leaves fold inward and droop when touched or shaken and re-open a few minutes later.
Sensitive Plant Medicinal Benefits
The Sensitive Plant is known for its many health benefits. All parts of this plant have medicinal uses. In India, it is used in Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani forms of medicine for treating various diseases. It is a natural source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can help to boost the immune system, improve digestion, and reduce inflammation. The herb has been used traditionally for ages, in the treatment of urogenital disorders, piles, dysentery, sinus, and also applied on wounds.
Caution: The plant should not be taken during pregnancy. The plant also has anti fertility properties, so should not be taken if you plan to conceive.
Growing Sensitive Plant
Indoor Sowing: Spring.
Direct Sowing: Spring.
- Sow the seeds in spring.
- Soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, before planting.
- Sow the seeds into small pots of moist compost, lightly covering them with compost.
- Cover with a clear plastic bag and place on a sunny windowsill, alternatively grow in a heated propagator.
- Germination in about 30 days.
- Grows best in full sunlight, well-draining and acidic soil.
