Long Island Brussels Sprouts originated from Brussels around the 1890s and remain one of the most popular varieties of Brussels Sprouts today. It is an old heirloom variety that grows on semi-dwarf plants that are 51-61 cm high with a spread that averages 30-61 cm wide. Brussels sprouts are slow-growing, hardy, long-season vegetables. The sprouts look like miniature cabbages and form where the leaves meet the stems. Expect to harvest 50-100 dark green sprouts that will be about 2.5 cm in diameter from each plant.

Growing Long Island Brussels Sprouts

Indoor Sowing: Late Summer and Autumn.

Direct Sowing: Autumn and Early Spring.

Select a site with full sun and rich soil.
Sow seeds of Brussels sprouts 3-4 inches apart or plant seedlings 18-24 inches apart.
Provide Brussels sprouts with steady, consistent moisture.
Begin fertilizing a month after planting.
Harvest Brussels sprouts when sprouts are 2.5cm in diameter.
