Savoy Perfection Cabbage is a drumhead type cabbage that forms dense, rounded heads usually measuring 18 to 23 cm in diameter and weighing between 2.7 and 3.6 kg. The leaves are highly “savoyed” (heavily textured and crinkled), ranging from soft emerald to deep blue-green. Sweeter and much milder than standard smooth-leaf cabbage, with a buttery, delicate heart.
Culinary Uses
- Raw: Shredded finely, it provides great crunch and visual appeal in fresh slaws and salads.
- Cooked: Because the leaves are pliable and softer than standard cabbage, they are perfect for stuffed cabbage rolls. It also holds up well in stir-fries, soups, and sautés.
- Odorless: Highly valued for stove-top cooking because it lacks the pungent, sulfurous aroma typical of other boiled brassicas.
Growing Savoy Perfection Cabbage
Indoor Sowing: Late Winter and Early Spring.
Direct Sowing: Late Summer, Autumn and Early Spring.
- In South Africa, cabbage can be planted throughout the year, except in the Highveld where is should not be planted between Late autumn and winter and also not in the summer months in the Lowveld, or any other region which experiences very hot and humid conditions.
- Start Cabbage Seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost.
- Use a good quality seed-starting mix and provide bright, indirect light.
- Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy.
- Once seedlings have developed 3-4 true leaves and have a developed root system, they are ready for transplanting.
