Carentan Leek Seeds. Carentan, also known as Improved Swiss Giant, is an old European variety that is hardy and suitable for autumn and winter use. They are very productive with nice white stems and bases.

Long, thick stems on vigorous and fast growing plants. A delicate, deliciously mild flavor and great fresh or cooked. Very adaptable and yields are good.

Growing Carentan Leeks

Indoor Sowing: Early Autumn and Late Winter.

Direct Sowing: Late Summer, Early Autumn and Mid Autumn.

• Sow the leek seed thinly about 2.5cm apart in drills about 0.5 cm deep and cover the seeds with fine sifted soil.
• After covering the seeds, firm the soil down and water if dry.
• Germination should take about 14-21 days.
• Thin the seedlings when they are about 6 weeks old, so that the plants are about 10 cm apart.
• By mid summer when the plants are about as thick as a pencil and 20 cm high, they will be ready for transplanting to their permanent position.
• Harden them off first by moving them outdoors for a few hours each day, gradually lengthening the time spent outside each day for about a week.
• When you’re ready to transplant, remove seedlings from the soil and gently separate them, if need be.
• Create narrow holes in your prepared bed that are about half as deep as the seedlings, from the root to the top of the stem.
• Set the seedlings into the holes.
• Fill the holes with water, but do not fill the holes with soil. The soil will gradually crumble in, but it will be loose, allowing the leeks to swell to a plump diameter as they grow.
