Purple Top White Globe Turnip – 200 Seeds

Purple Top White Globe Turnip is an old heirloom turnip dating back prior to 1880. The roots are smooth and nearly round. Bright purple on top and creamy white in the portion below the soil line. They are mild flavored and sweet, and can reach 13cm in diameter but are better for eating when picked at 5-8cm. The young leaves of this variety can be cooked.  This variety of turnips is popular for both home and commercial growth.

Growing Purple Top White Globe Turnip

Indoor Sowing: Not Recommended.

Direct Sowing: Late Winter, Early Autumn and Mid Autumn.

• Grow turnips in full sun or partial shade.
• Plant turnips in well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a soil pH of 5.5 to 6.8.
• Surface sow turnip seeds in rich, deeply worked soil in full sun and cover with a layer of soil.
• Keep them moist, but not soggy until the seeds germinate in about 7-10 days.
• Thin seedlings so that they are 10 – 15cm apart.
• They are best harvested before temperatures exceed 24°C .
