Dragon Tree – 5 Seeds

Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco) is an evergreen, long lived tree which once it is mature, can reach up to 15m or more in height with a trunk of 5m or more in circumference, starting with a smooth bark that evolves to a more rough texture as it ages. When young, the tree has a single stem. At 10–15 years of age, the stem stops growing and produces a flower spike with white, lily-like perfumed flowers, followed by coral berries. Soon a crown of terminal buds appears and the plant starts branching. Each branch grows for 10–15 years and re-branches, so a mature tree has an umbrella-like habit. It grows slowly, requiring about 10 years to reach 1.2m in height, but can grow much faster. Due to it’s very slow growth, the tree is often grown in containers.

Growing Dragon Tree

Indoor Sowing: Spring and Summer.

Direct Sowing: Spring and Summer.

• Seeds should be planted in Spring or Summer.
• Soak the seeds in room temperature water for 3 days.
• Add seed starter mix to a small pot and water the soil until it is slightly moist.
• Place seeds on the potting mix and cover them lightly with more mix.
• Keep soil moist, but not saturated.
• Transplant seedlings to regular potting soil in individual pots.
• Put the pots in bright, indirect light, but not in direct sun.
• Requires well draining soil and should be grown in partial shade.
• Do not over-water the tree, as it is prone to root rot if the soil is to wet.
