Growing Crimson Globe Beetroot
Indoor Sowing: Spring and Autumn.
Direct Sowing: Year Round.
- The best planting times for beetroot are spring and autumn, but the vegetables also do well during summer on South Africa’s Highveld and winter in the Lowveld.
- Make sure the soil in your bed or container is loose, fertile soil with plenty of well rotted organic matter added.
- Form a groove (drill) in the prepared bed about 2 cm deep.
- Sow the beetroot seeds 10 cm apart in the drill.
- Space rows 30 cm apart.
- Optimum germination temperatures of between 6°C and 24ºC.
- Beetroot seeds are clusters of seeds which will produce 3 or 4 separate seedlings.
- Thin the new seedlings to leave the strongest otherwise the beets will be crowded and remain small.
- Keep the plants well watered in dry conditions.
