Detroit Dark Red Beetroot – 50 Seeds

Detroit Dark Red Beetroot is a globular shaped beet. Flesh is deep red throughout and free of rings. Dark green foliage with red veins. Excellent flavor and very sweet. It’s slow bolting habit and good round shape even at early development, make Detroit Dark Red suitable for bunching, topping and home garden use in temperate and subtropical regions. Detroit Dark Red has intermediate resistance to Leaf spot.

An early variety, Detroit Dark Red beets store well and are also good for canning and freezing. The dark-green leaves striped with red are wonderful braised or in salads.

Growing Detroit Dark Red Beetroot

Indoor Sowing: Spring and Autumn.

Direct Sowing: Year Round.

• The best planting times for beetroot are spring and autumn, but the vegetables also do well during summer on South Africa’s Highveld and winter in the Lowveld.
• Make sure the soil in your bed or container is loose, fertile soil with plenty of well rotted organic matter added.
• Form a groove (drill) in the prepared bed about 2 cm deep.
• Sow the beetroot seeds 10 cm apart in the drill.
• Space rows 30 cm apart.
• Optimum germination temperatures of between 6°C and 24ºC.
• Beetroot seeds are clusters of seeds which will produce 3 or 4 separate seedlings.
• Thin the new seedlings to leave the strongest otherwise the beets will be crowded and remain small.
• Keep the plants well watered in dry conditions.
